When physicians and other health care professionals order laboratory exams to assess patients' health, a medical technologist is responsible for the analysis of specimens collected. Medical laboratory technologists may specialize in areas such as clinical chemistry, clinical microbiology, hematology, histotechnology, immunohematology, cytotechnology and cytogenetics. This guide will provide academic resources for students and faculty enrolled in the Medical Laboratory Technician program at Mercyhurst College. Lauderdale campus, is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). Students will be trained to possess skills to perform laboratory tests in accordance with standardized laboratory practices in clinical chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, clinical microbiology, immunohematology and serology/immunology. Are required to take theory and lab classes in areas that may include: Organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, clinical chemistry, biology, microbiology and bacteriology, immunology and hematology, cytotechnology and molecular biology, mathematics, anatomy and physiology, and immunohematology.
